Copy-editing for Book Printing
Origin:Image Printing  Data: 4/16/2011  Keywords: Book Printing, Book Printing China, Packaging Printing, Printing China, Book Printing, Box Packaging Printing, Commercial Printing

The aim of the Book Printing copy-editor, who may be the only person other than the Commercial Printing author who reads the book before publication, is to ensure that the text and illustrations are clear, correct and consistent for both the printer and the ultimate readers. Good copy-editing is invisible: it aims to present the book the author would have written if he or she had had more time or experience - not, as some new copy-editors think, their own improved version.
The copy-editor is also usually expected to look out for passages that may be libellous.
Any statement in a book or journal or newspaper, or any other published matter (an advertisement, e-mail or website, for example), runs the risk of being defamatory if it contains an untrue allegation or imputation which disparages the reputation of another. In the case of an unauthorized biography of a leading celebrity, a read by a lawyer may be required alongside evidence from the author to back up any controversial
The novelist refused to have her work edited, even resisting changes to her punctuation.

In book printing services workflows, there is editing, typesetting, book cover design and other pre-press expenses. After the book is printed, it has to be promoted with book reviews, news releases and some direct email advertising. For a book like the one described above, you used to have to budget about $10,000 to get started. Today, with the new writing, production and promoting techniques described, you need just $2,000 to $5,000. Your book could sell for $14.95 or $19.95 depending upon the audience. With this spread between production costs and selling price, you won't even mind giving the bookstore or other quantity-buyer a 40 percent discount. More and more printers are cheating; they are mis-manufacturing books.

Just like wood, the paper has a grain. The paper in a book should have its grain oriented vertically or top to bottom. If the paper's grain is positioned horizontally, the book will have a strange feel to it. The book will not "roll" open and will want to snap shut. Your customers and bookstore browsers will not know what the "problem" is but they will subconsciously feel that something is odd about your book. It will make them uncomfortable. And you may lose the sale. What is the problem? Printing presses are designed to print certain sizes of books. 5.5 x 8.5 is just half of 8.5 x 11 but one press should not be used to print both trim sizes. If the same press is used for both, the grain in one book will be 90 degrees off. Some book printers have just one press for text and try to make do by printing both sizes of books. They are not competing fairly with other printers. They are not serving their publisher-customers properly. Pick up a sheet of paper. Tear it. Now turn it 90 degrees and tear it again. The tear will be cleaner with the grain. Roll the paper in each direction with your fingers. You can usually tell which way the grain is. When you send the request for quotations (RFQs) to printers, specify "right grain" printing. Printers know the difference. Let them know that you know the difference.
