The marketing within book printing field used to be regarded as simply the promotion of new books. In trade book printing, this would involve talking to the literary editors on the national newspapers, securing review coverage, and placing relevant advertisements. Today marketing has a much broader role and marketers play a pivotal role in many aspects of a books publication. The expansion of the internet has given a prominent role to marketing, which is a cost-effective method of reaching potential audiences and offers a way for to find out more about their customers.

Marketing encompasses numerous, diverse activities. The marketing manager may first become involved at the publishing proposal stage or immediately post-contract. They may advise on product development, especially when the project is a large investment. They may be involved in a range of discussions about the books pricing, its cover, and its target market. From discussions with editors and sales staff, each book is evaluated and decisions made on the promotional material required and what publicity and media coverage should be sought. The marketing budget set may be proportional to the expected sales revenue. It is impossible to promote all books equally and, especially in consumer book and textbook publishing, the lead titles receive by far the largest budgets. The key judgment for every title is deciding how much to spend to generate profitable sales that more than recoup the outlay.

Print on demand with digital technology is used as a way of demand book printing services for a fixed cost per copy, regardless of the size of the order. While the unit price of each physical copy printed is higher than with offset printing, the average cost is lower for very small print runs, because setup costs are much higher for offset printing.

POD has other business benefits besides lower costs (for small runs).

  • Technical set-up is usually quicker than for offset printing.
  • Large inventories of a book or print material do not need to be kept in stock, reducing storage, handling costs, and inventory accounting costs
  • There is little or no waste from unsold products.

These advantages reduce the risks associated with publishing books and prints and can lead to increased choice for consumers. However, the reduced risks for the publisher can also mean that quality control is less rigorous than usual. Print on demand (POD), sometimes called publish on demand book printing services and business process in which new copies of a book (or other document) are not printed until an order has been received. Print on Demand developed only after digital printing began, because it was not economical to print single copies using traditional printing technology such as letterpress and offset printing. Many traditional small presses have replaced their traditional printing equipment with POD equipment or contract their printing out to POD service providers. Many academic publishers, including university presses, use POD services to maintain a large backlist; some even use POD for all of their publications. Larger publishers may use POD in special circumstances, such as reprinting older titles that had been out of print or for performing test marketing.
