In modern book printing industry, the hardcover and softcover format books played in different roles. In order to meet the mass-market, book printing company have to reduce the costs including the printing, the transportation, the distribution and the design. The selling price should be lower as possible in the mass-market for a softcover book. The book printing industry became strong and matures along with the challenges and opportunities.

Before the 1970s, the hardback publishers were used to acquiring the exclusive right to publish an author's work for the full term of copyright in hardback and paperback, even though they had no mass-market paperback publishing capability. The hardcover and softcover book publishers divided the market into professional workshops and mass-market for both formats. But in order to get much more profits, they have to cooperate in manuscripts and distribution channels. They worked together as a close unit against the authors, and shared the risks of sales and cash flows, which make the distribution and manuscript resources serve for this industry but not abrupt from it.

Copyright trading was popular from then on. They shared same title as different format for each potential consumer from integrated distribution channels. They made themselves strong when negotiate with the distributor. Win-win is good for this field. The original of printing were changing in order to reduce entire cost. UK publishers started with overseas sourcing, especially for hardcover books publishers, because there are much more space and buffers compared with printing in domestics even though they had to take much more time and costs for transportations. Overseas sourcing also pushed the publishers to enhance their storage and supply chain management.

A large number of book store patrons are strictly browsers. They know they want something to snuggle up with on the couch, on the beach or on that long flight, they are just waiting for something to catch their eye. In book stores, your book will probably be displayed spine-out, fighting for attention among a line of other books inthe same genre. The spine is a critically compelling component usually seen before the prospective consumer even gets to that all-important front and back cover. That spine has to stand out, attract attention, and say, "Pick me up!" So, when designing your book cover, think of the spine as a miniature billboard. Add a compelling visual element and make certain the title is readable on this narrow band of real estate. Develop the interior design of the book so its page count generates a spine of a half-inch or more. This will give your book's spine greater opportunity to complete on the shelf. If your page count is over 224, you will likely make the half-inch mark. If not, ask about high-bulk paper to thicken up the book and toleverage your spine's opportunity to jump off the shelf.
