For most stages within book printing, the high cost of advertising in the press, magazines, or on television or radio, or by poster would not be recouped by the sales generated. It has to be used very selectively, and short-lived, large-scale consumer advertising is restricted to major consumer books. The large publishers spend most of their budget on press and outdoor advertising, especially adverts on the London Underground and buses. Although its effectiveness is intangible, it encourages the book trade to buy and display the book and pleases authors and agents. Consumer outdoor advertising for books includes ads on London.

Consumer book publishers normally produce imprint catalogues announcing their forthcoming books geared to their six-monthly selling cycles. The autumn/ winter catalogue appears in time for the preceding mid-summer sales conference; the spring/summer catalogue appears for the preceding Christmas sales conference. Consumer publishers may issue monthly catalogues or stock lists. Catalogues are distributed to all members of the supply chain and to main libraries, to the public (via booksellers to account customers), and to review editors and the media. The stock lists covering new and backlist books and their prices which accompany catalogues are used by the sales representatives (reps) and the book trade for ordering.

The number of new book titles jumped from about 50,000 titles in 1985 to about 200,000 titles in 2004. The number of hardcover book printing publishers jumped to more than 78,000 from well under half that in 1985 according to Frank J. Romano. 80% of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year. 70% of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years. 58% of the adult U.S. population never reads another book after high school. Adults in the U.S. spent $5.4 billion on movies last year but they spent $25.6 billion on books. The pessimist says our market is smaller than we thought. The optimist says, our potential market is larger than we thought.
