The Operation of Literary Agents in Book Printing Industry
Origin:Image Printing  Data: 3/29/2011  Keywords: Book Printing Industry Literary Agents

How the literary agents play their roles in book printing industry? It may be a secret for the people not in book printing companies. Generally these agents operate in an increasingly polarized market in which a small number of top selling authors secure advances against royalties, compared to the majority of authors receiving advances. An agent may spend equal amounts of time on both types of author, but with a very different financial return. For example, if an agent secures an advance of 6,000 pounds and charges 15 percent commission, their share is just 900 pounds.

Literary agents represent many of the established professional writers. While some agents are prepared to review unsolicited manuscripts from aspiring novelists for which they may charge a reading fee, others discourage this practice and take on new clients only on personal recommendations from credited sources, such as media contacts and their other clients. Agents manage lists of authors and taking on a new writer may mean dropping an established client. Rarely is it worth while for an agent to represent academics unless their work appeals to a wide readership. Authors can make multiple submissions but this method should be used with caution. Agents understand that authors need to make multiple submissions to agencies but dislike the beauty parades. Time is limited and if one suspects the author may go elsewhere then one simply says no at the beginning. Keep quiet about multiple submissions and only send a few at a time so one can adapt the submission in the light of responses.
