Digital Rights Management of Book Printing

It is a new topic for digital rights management in book printing field, although digitization has reduced the costs of copying and distribution to next to nothing. The production of ideas and information by authors and publishers is very expensive in time and money. Publishers earn their living from selling ideas and information and make efforts to protect it from illicit copying. They are fearful that their work will escape into the wild on the internet from which they receive no payment. The technical means of controlling usage is broadly referred to as Digital Rights Management (DRM). It enables rights owners to identify their intellectual property via metadata identifiers such as DOI increasingly being developed for the publishing world, and giving the opportunity to describe the rights on offer, fees and access conditions for potential users in a reliable licensing environment. It can also track usage and collect appropriate revenues.

The software for DRM is problematic. DRM systems are frequently broken into by hackers, not least because of the weakness that each time a proprietary system gives someone a locked item, a secret hidden key is provided to unlock it. Hackers around the world work on discovering such secrets, and then they may then publish them on the internet for others to access the content. DRM can also be sidestepped by a user scanning a printed book and posting it for free on the internet. When a reader buys a printed book, there are few restrictions on its further uses.

Since the use by consumers of digital materials is defined by a license, it may be sufficient in some cases for publishers to take the risk that they are sufficiently honest and trustworthy not to abuse their rights. A good example is the way publishers' license materials to universities, via their libraries. The user group is clearly defined and they are authenticated through the use of a password system giving controlled access to the institutional site. Authentication reassures publishers that any points of leakage outside the user group may be identified and halted, and helps universities to limit their liability in the case of defamation, obscenity or copyright infringement.

Today's logo can be traced back to ancient China where artists and craftsmen marked their work with a distinctive pictorial symbol. In the industrialized age these personal marks evolved into trademarks which were protected by law. Your logo not only marks your products and your book printing company but it also serves as asignature for your events. A strong logo instantly communicates an identity in a single image. It must have style. It must be timeless, appropriate and unique. Itmust be readable when larger than a billboard or smaller than a postage stamp, in one color or in full-color. A publisher logo has to be effective on book's spine - a small, less than half-inch space. And think about adding a tag line and how you can interchange tag lines for specific targeted genres. Remember your logo is often the public's first contact with your company and helps establish that all-important first impression. Your logo is essentially the cornerstone of your brand-building efforts as a publisher. Most books in a book store are shelved with spines out. Although your logo may not be well known, it could help draw attention to your cover by virtue of its color or shape.
