Non-consumer Book Printing Industry Consolidation
Origin:Image Printing  Data: 3/10/2011  Keywords: Non-consumer Book Printing

Among all book printing fields, non-consumer books always play important roles. These books mainly include educational, academic, scientific, technical, medical, learned journals and other professional publishing sectors. Every publisher wants to dominate the sectors in which they specialize, so do non-consumer publishers. But anyway, the publishers who produce high-level books and information services for professional sectors become highly profitable and strongly cash generative.

During 1960s and 1970s, western country governments popularly increased funding for education fields, which also aided the expansion of educational book printing field business. The academic publishers similarly responded to the growth in higher education. The expansion in student numbers, and the funding of university libraries, stimulated the publishing of high-priced academic monographs and learned journals, produced especially by the STM (scientific, technical, medical) book publishers.

The consolidation also happened between different countries. Traditionally, the British publishers enjoyed their export markets. But the American publishers had a much larger home market and so gave little emphasis to exports. However, the changes happened in college textbook publishing field. After Second World War, US Marshall Plan designed to aid the reconstruction of post-war Europe, helped the US publishers to export college textbooks, which were sold in the UK at very low prices. The publishers opened subsidiaries in the UK and came to dominate college textbook adoption markets worldwide, Commonwealth countries included, by issuing international editions, not for sale in the US.

In earlier 21 century, the consolidation of ownership has continued rapidly. Many European publishers have acquired US publishers in European countries. During this process, the private equity and risk investment groups have played a significant role in reassembling publishing imprints and assets, both by purchasing them and selling them on in new forms. A major driving power for this is the migration to electronic formats and services, and the high costs involved in making the transition.

More than 2,000 energized book printing company has graduated from our weekend workshops here in Image Printing. Some book printing company got so much out of weekend, they are returning fro an update on the industry. Four times a year, 23 people invest their money and journey to Image Printing to learn nore book printing information, market, promoting and distributing. The events are held at Image Printing's home pages, high on a hill overlooking the pacific. At last count, this area on the central California coast boasted of 365 book authors. With a population of about 160,000, that probably means the Santa Barbara South Coast has more published authors, per capita, than any other community. Some of the better-known authors are Sue Grafton, Barnaby Conrad, Jack Canfield, Bradford Dillman, Jane Russell, Jonathan Winters, and William Peter Blatty. We noted that Santa Barbara has over 365 book authors. Now we read the median price for a home on the south coast is over $960,000. If there is a correlation between these numbers, then some local authors are doing very well. Changing the way books are written, produced and promoted.
